Hospitals

The James Cook University Hospital, St Luke’s Hospital, Cater Bequest Hospital and Teesside Hospice are all within our two parish boundaries. They are all regularly visited and a priest is on-call 24 hours a day to respond to emergency needs in all of them.

Emergency

If someone you know is in hospital and is close to death, the quickest way to get a priest to them is to ask the ward staff to page the on-call catholic chaplain. We are rarely more than half an hour away and are usually there within minutes. The ward staff can be contacted through the hospital switchboard on 01642 850850.

Hospital Chaplaincy

Fr Bill Surplus is the Main Catholic Hospital Chaplain. Fr Paul Farrer is his back up. Sr Dymphna regularly visits the sick. Together they are contracted to work 26 hours per week at the hospital and to provide 24 hour emergency cover on a permanent basis.

They are supported on occasion by other priests from the Central Middlesbrough Pastoral Area.

Around 50 extra-ordinary ministers of Holy Communion from across the town volunteer in the Hospital each weekend. It should be the case that, either on a Saturday or a Sunday each Catholic in the Hospital is seen by one of these visitors and offered the chance to receive Holy Communion.

If you are going into hospital and would like a visit do call us to let us know on 01642 814794.
